Zeus, the patron of hospitality (Xenios Zeus means Zeus of hospitality in Greek) is related to honey.
Thus honey was offered to honour guests. Its nutritional value was appreciated as constituting a full meal in itself and not as complementary. Moreover, the social structure of bees is considered sacred in Greece as it symbolises the divine spirit of creation and harmony. We have therefore named our honey Zeus as it is the forerunner in quality and it encapsulates the spirit of the all-powerful substance that nourishes and rejuvenates Gods and heroes alike.
