Goddess Demetra, the Mother Earth, was the Goddess of food and nurishment. She gave birth to Pluto and Abudantia (Afthonia in Greek) to cater humans. She is also the goddess of fertility and the patron of agriculture and fruit cultivation. Her value to the ancient world is immeasurable. Hence, she was worshipped at the greatest of religious ceremonies, that of Eleusinian Mysteries. We have given her name to the fruit of the olive tree since it symbolises the ultimate food along with bread. Moreover it stands for the riches of the Earth delivered by the Goddess to humans. Demetra olives, coming from the land blessed by Light and the Goddess of fertility, signify prosperity and abundance in contemporary nutrition.
